   Depends what your goals are. Do you want to know music theory, proper fingering for chord positions, etc? Take in-person lessons. Do you just want to play guitar by ear? Pick a song you like, find the tab (tablature) transcription on the interwebs and hack it out. You’ll pick up stuff as you learn to play various songs. Check out. the forum is quite good.

   There are video courses available that you can pause and replay when and as often as you want. It is a definite advantage over a teacher who will be available for only an hour or so at the time and that you will have to pay by the hour.
