Here are some tips to help you learn to play lead guitar in a rock band. You need to put in a lot of work to learn the skills it takes to create and play great solo guitar in a band context.

One difficulty you will encounter is that it is hard to get experience playing lead guitar with a band when you are still learning. Bands are almost always looking for a lead guitarist who can already play. Fortunately there are several solutions to this problem.

The first easy solution is to record yourself playing the chord progressions and songs you want to solo with. You can record yourself with a tape recorder or a more modern digital recorder. You can even use your PC. You’ll need a cable to connect your electric guitar to the PCs line-in connection. Alternatively you can use a microphone with your acoustic guitar.

This solution also gives you plenty of opportunity to practice playing your chord progressions. You’ll need recordings several minutes long to give you room to practice and try out different scales and licks.

You might find recording complete backing tracks like this gets tedious after a while. If this is the case then you might want to get yourself a sampler/looper. A sampler/looper allows you to record a short passage, the sample, and then play it over and over again in a loop.

With a sampler/looper you need record only one verse or even only one measure of the chord progression or song you want to play over. You then let the looper play this sample for as long as you want while you practice your scales, licks and solos.

The two solutions described above are both very flexible, you can record any backing you want. However, at some point you will want to practice with a fuller band sound to back you up. This helps you to get used to listening to and following the drums, bass and other instruments. You can also learn how your licks and solos sound in the full band context.

Backing tracks, also known as jam tracks, are an excellent tool for this. You can find many high quality whole band backing tracks for you to play solo guitar over.

You can buy backing tracks in many musical styles. Some popular backing tracks series are the “Play Guitar With…” series from Wise Publications, or Band In The Pocket from Five Feathers Music. These come in book and CD format and you can use them easily with your home stereo. You can also find many web sites where you can download backing track audio files.

There you have three ways to develop your lead guitar skills with backing music. Use them to build your note choice and timing skills and one day you will be ready to take the lead in a real live rock band.

Everyone new to learning guitar, want an electric guitar, because they so all their favourite rock stars with them on TV. But almost every beginner should learn the acoustic guitar first. It’s not as bigger investment as a electric guitar is, and in my opinion they’re easier to play. Don’t have a guitar yet? I recommend finding a cheap or second hand acoustic guitar on eBay, you don’t want a brilliant guitar. You only need it to practice chords and strumming rhythms!

1. Firstly you can find brilliant websites on the internet that have a lot of brilliant information on learning guitar, you can even find video lessons! I recommend finding one website, and sticking to it, don’t go switching to different video lessons straight away. Because what you learn in the first videos may not be in the second videos on the different website. Everyone teaches guitar differently remember.

2. Study your guitar, learn how the different parts work etc. Knowing this will make your life easier in the future with learning guitar.

3. Learn how to tune your guitar. You can easily find an online guitar tuner, that will take you by the hand and tune your guitar for you. But eventually you’ll want to learn how to tune your guitar by ear. So get familiar with the sounds of a tuned guitar.

4. Learn how to play as many chords as possible. This requires months of practice. And then you’ll still not done. You’ll learn want to learn how to play each chord in as many different ways possible. There are 10 different ways to play the C chord, get on it! Knowing how to play each chord differently will help you greatly when playing different songs, because you could be in a position where the C chord is easily played a certain way.

5. Finally, practice daily. I recommend practicing at least an hour a day. You can even watch TV and practice different chord placements silently!

The guitar is a stringed musical instrument that is played by plucking or strumming the strings, while the fingers hold down the strings in certain combinations, to play the notes. Most guitars have six strings that are tuned on the scale E A D G B E. There are two broad categories of guitars today, acoustic and electric.

Acoustic guitars have hollow bodies, called sound boxes, which produce the sound, and thus do not need amplification. However, some modern ones do come with the electronics so that it can be connected to an amplifier. On the other hand, the body of an electric guitar is solid on only semi-hollow and needs to be connected to an amplifier to be heard.

Thanks to the electronics you can produce all kinds of effects and sounds with an electric guitar that is very hard or impossible to reproduce on an acoustic guitar. Samples of the special effects that can be produced on an electric guitar are: distortion, wah, phasers, compression, vibrato, flanging and chorus effect. These effects cause the sound produced by the same note to be different. For example:

- Distortion effect. This will produce a distorted and very heavy sound, as often used in heavy metal and rock music.

- Wah effect. The frequency of the note goes up and down each time you hit the foot pedal.

- Flanging effect. This effect causes a pause in the signal, followed by a series of the note originally played, sounding like an echo.

The guitar is used to play almost any kind of music, and is usually a big part of the music played by a band. Learning to play a guitar can be exciting and is a great way to entertain yourself and your friend.

When you decide to learn to play the guitar you will also have to learn tablatures and sheet music. Guitar sheet music is useful to guide you when learning to play the guitar, as you just have to follow the notes and tablatures illustrated on the sheet music. It is a great tool to help you play your guitar. By practicing frequently and being dedicated to learning the notes, you will soon be playing like an expert.
