Not long ago a major magazine published a story about beginner guitar lessons and the emergence of downloadable videos as an alternative to in-person instruction with a guitar tutor. In the past if you wanted to learn how to play the guitar, you either had to teach yourself utilizing a variety of printed manuals or schedule an appointment with a guitar instructor who could walk you through the process of learning basic chords and some simple songs. As with any instrument, the more you practice playing the guitar at the better you get. There was only one problem with this arrangement.

Many people often have a hard time being able to successfully schedule lessons with a guitar instructor, or for that matter, be able to afford the ongoing tuition fees. So to answer the question, where can I learn to play the guitar, I’ll say, depends. Depends on how much time, money, and motivation you have to give.

How much time determines how much time you are willing to put towards practicing. As in anything, to get really good on the guitar takes a lot of practice. You can shortcut some of this practice time, or at least make it go faster, by getting into a band. A band forces you to get good fast. In order to keep up with the other members, you’ll have to develop your chords and rhythms quickly, or you may get booted!

How much money determines if you can afford lessons. A good teacher will be able to significantly shorten the learning curve, and get you good faster. If you can’t afford a teacher, there are many courses available online that will give you all the secrets you need to learn, but it may take you longer to get there.

Finally, motivation is what keeps you going when it seems that you will never get the hang of playing the guitar. When your fingers are hurting, and you just can’t seem to figure out what that chord is, motivation will keep you going.

I think the best answer to where can I learn to play the guitar is yourself. No matter if you can’t afford a teacher, if you can’t find a band to be in, if nothing seems to be working, you have to decide you’re just going to do it.

Fur Elise is a famous piano solo by Beethoven. In this guitar lesson you will learn to play Fur Elise on your guitar. You don’t have to read sheet music notation so let’s start!

As I told you we will not use sheet music. Instead we will use guitar tablature.

Tablature is a form of musical notation, often with numbers and letters, which tells the player where to place their fingers on the guitar fretboard rather than which pitches to play.

I will use my own type of guitar tab notation today to make sure that the guitar tab is correctly displayed on article sites. The more common guitar tab staff notation you will find on my site.

The six strings on your guitar is numbered from the one with the highest pitch. This string is called the first string.

Let’s start with the first part of the melody with guitar tab:

Now we will take a look at this guitar tab and how to interpret it. You have probably noticed that the numbers are organized in pairs.

The first number in the pair tells you what fret to press down and the second number what string to play.

01 tells you to play the open first string. This means that you play the string without pressing down a left hand finger.

42 indicates that you press down a left hand finger on the fourth fret of the second string. Well, now it’s time for you to play the melody. Did you recognize the melody? Good!

This type of guitar tab doesn’t indicate the length of the notes. If you sing the lyrics you will probably feel how to play the notes.

What finger should you use when you play with your right hand? In this guitar lesson we will not concentrate on your right hand. I suggest that you play the notes with your thumb or in another way you choose.

Let’s play the next guitar tab:

What about your left hand? You can play the notes with your index finger but I suggest that you assign the notes on the first fret to your index finger, the notes on the second fret to your middle finger and so on.

It means that the 42 note in the beginning of the melody will be played with your little finger. Is it difficult? Yes, it will be difficult but not for long! You will get used to these fingerings if you are persistent!

In the long run you will probably even find it easier to play melodies this way if you get used to this more sophisticated fingering!

Let’s continue! The next guitar tab is identical with the first line:

How can I learn to play the guitar, is one the questions I’m most often asked.

I remember wanting to learn to play the guitar from the age of seven. My first guitar was an inexpensive electric guitar.

Learning to play guitar can be difficult at first, however it helps if you are highly motivated to learn.

I now teach guitar and one of the questions I’m asked most is, what chords I should learn first.

The easiest guitar chords to learn when you are starting out are C major, G and G7th, D, E, F and D7th. With these chords you will be able to strum along to many songs and will be on your way to learning more sophisticated routines. These basic chords, along with some finger picking using the other hand, will give you the opportunity to learn co-ordination and beat; it will also prepare your fingers for more difficult patterns.

In your venture to learn to learn to play the guitar you must build on the basics, so learn these and other simple chords and sequences first, feel confident with and importantly, have fun with them, this will stand you in good stead for more advanced guitar playing.

You will quickly discover whether or not you are cut out for playing the guitar. It’s difficult for me to explain because it’s more a feeling than a conscious realization! If you find playing the guitar frustrates you and leaves you feeling exasperated and despondent then it’s probably not for you.

The challenges you face when learning to play guitar should be met with passion and excitement, each one being conquered with a feeling of pride.

Of course there will be times when everyone learning to play guitar will get frustrated and impatient, but those with a passion will stick with it until they conquer the challenges. You may also consider taking lessons; a good guitar tutor is worth their weight in gold.

Before deciding on your guitar tutor ask around, are they recommended? Do they have a good reputation and relevant experience? Also check that they are capable of the standards you aspire to. I remember my first guitar teacher, he was brilliant, however I quickly outgrew his level of skill and moved on to learn more on my own.

I talked above about frustration and about giving up too easily if you aren’t learning as quickly as you feel you should. Please don’t confuse this advice with the assumption that it’s easy to learn to play guitar. It does take lots of perseverance, determination and crucially practice! So, don’t give up at the first hurdle, stick with learning to play guitar for at least 6 months before you quit on it.

Holding the pick closer to the tip has been said to improve the abilities of professionals to play fast guitar. See if a few varied placements of your fingers change your talent at all.

5. Come up with your own set of scales and riffs to play during down time.

If you want to really get to a new level of speed with the guitar, having your own riffs and scales to practice is essential. Pick some riffs that are fun but challenging so that monotonous practice won’t bore you to death.

6. You have to start slow and then increase your speed with time.

Starting your skills slow seems a little odd if you plan to play fast guitar. However, by starting at a slower tempo you can develop better rhythm and technique for the complicated riffs in the future.

7. Double-pick by strumming up and down on the strings.

Strumming individual strings by only hitting them downwards just isn’t going to cut it anymore. Learn to hit the strings moving your pick down and then back up in order to maximize your speeds.

To play fast guitar you can’t get down on your self after only a few short practices. When things seem to be hopeless, keep your head up and your goals in mind.
