Learning is a slow process that requires patience and perseverance. It is therefore sensible if the parents as well as the children do not have high expectations in the initial stages. Know the child’s limitations and make it a point not to set high goals which are rather beyond their capabilities. If they are made to treat the lessons as a hobby instead of a compulsion, their attitude will change accordingly. You can encourage the child by setting realistic goals and treat him/her to gifts when they accomplish a goal. When the right techniques are used and the parents are supportive, learning to play a guitar can indeed be a ‘child’s play’.

If you want to master the guitar, guitar techniques must be developed that will allow you to play anything that you can hear in your mind.

You must teach your fingers and your mind to learn new techniques, while changing any bad habits that you may have already picked up

You need to learn guitar techniques for your left and right hand, trying not to skip over any technique, just because they might be too hard.

Break your practise time up into categories to focus on certain techniques that you are having trouble with, or try and learn a new guitar technique to having any mental blocks.

Don’t try and play things to fast to start with, as you need to learn every note, training your fingers to move exactly where they should move. You are after quality not quantity. If your hands become sore from playing the same thing over and over, take a break, shake out your hands, learn some fingers and wrist stretching exercises as your hands are the most valuable tool when you learn guitar.

Make sure you are holding the guitar correctly, that you are using the correct fingers for each note, that your fingers are close to each string between notes. When you are practising your guitar techniques, get as much information about it as you can. Search online, watch videos, take guitar lessons, ask friends.

Everyone can achieve whatever they desire with a little time and practice. Don’t get frustrated and beat yourself up if you cant learn a guitar technique, this is meant to be fun right?

Try something else for awhile and come back to it later. The masters of the guitar weren’t born with a guitar in their hand, or are from another planet, they found out what worked for them, and practise, practise, practise!!!

It may just take a little extra time for you, unless you don’t have anything else to do except play guitar all day, and if you fall into that category then I am totally jealous of you!
